Chapter 20 - Agon/Zelus

Watching Leena confront that TV host was like watching a warrior behead an enemy general. It was a decisive blow that would make everyone take notice. That’s what she should get instead of being looked over as the unwanted half of her last partnership. I knew what it felt like to not be wanted, to not be seen for who I really was. Nobody deserved that.

“So…” I sped up to match her pace, remembering the mornings I’d walked her home since the festival. I’d never thought just walking with somebody could feel so good.

“So?”

I blushed, completely forgetting where I was going with that. “I’m guessing you want to find a duel?”

“Or we could celebrate being one step closer to the tournament?” She looked at me from the corner of her eye, trying to hide a mischievous smile. “I mean, I for one, could use a distraction. At least until we know if we’re in the tournament or not.”

Leena rarely took a break from dueling, so I should be jumping at the chance to have fun with her, but the tournament didn’t excite me like it did her. I wanted to help her win it so she could finally free herself of Kai and be happy, but at the same time, I knew winning it would get me closer to leaving her.

“Unless you don’t want to celebrate with me?” Leena tilted her head, toying with the necklace I’d given her. When I didn’t answer for a moment too long, she turned away. “Let’s find a duel then, like you said. No problem.”

Her voice was overly cheerful and her smile had all the fakeness of somebody hiding their true feelings. I’d seen that smile on her too many times already, but it had never been because of me.

“Nope.” I winked at her, but she just raised her eyebrow at my attempt at humor, reminding me of the first time we’d met. I sighed. “I’m sorry. This is all moving so fast. I never thought we’d actually get to rank three with enough fans in time to possibly qualify.”

“Really? I wasn’t worried for a moment, not with the crazy deck you chose for us.” She bumped her arm into mine, nudging me. “So we should celebrate?”

“Definitely.” I grinned. “What did you have in mind?”

“Isn’t that usually your area of expertise?” She stepped closer, kissing me on the cheek. “I’m sure we can think of something.”

Her sultry voice sent a shiver down my spine. Yes. We could definitely think of something. How much time would I have with her if we kept doing this well? I wanted to make the most of it before I left. Make sure she knew how amazing she was.

Maybe the other teams would be really good and would beat us without me trying to tank our chances. Then I wouldn’t have to feel bad when we lost. I’d get to stay here with Leena, waiting for the next tournament in six months. Now that was a selfish thought.
